Ummm... there's a lot going on! But how can I feel some sense of control and not totally lose myself in this postpartum period?

 

Let's go back to my first postpartum experience.

I was dealing with the emotional and physical aftermath of an unplanned C-section...that was definitely not on my unmedicated birth plan or even a slight thought in my brain before delivery. Now I had a little human relying on me (and my boobies) to stay alive, when I barely felt like I was holding myself together. I stumbled across a therapist's instagram post promoting a virtual joint women's health summit when I was 2 weeks postpartum. I joined on a whim and spent 2 days on the couch nursing my baby, eating literally everything (hello breastfeeding hunger), and learning from fellow dietitians, therapists, lactation consultants, and life coaches - all focused on postpartum health. 

This is where 4th Trimester Fundamentals began, my signature early postpartum nutrition course to help mamas feel confident in their ability to nourish themself + a baby (without all the BS)!


I took what I learned in the summit and combined it with my own nutrition education as a women's health dietitian. I KNEW that mental health was definitely influenced by how you nourish your body so I created a framework for myself to follow to get out of the postpartum slump, heal my body, and support a thriving milk supply. I opened up a program and took on 10 other moms to try it with me, and guess what?

I THRIVED in postpartum.

My anxiety let up and I could control the scary mommy thoughts.

My milk supply flourished and my baby got chunky.

My energy felt great despite newborn sleep challenges. 

The best part? I started to feel like ME again by the time the first 12 weeks of postpartum were up because I knew exactly how my body and brain should be nourished.  The other moms did too!

I was afraid of never feeling like myself again. Yes, I'm a mom now and definitely not the same, but I am still ME

Let's face it, postpartum has a lot of ups and downs:

Unplanned delivery complications

Crazy hormone fluctuations

Anxiety you never thought you'd experience

Maybe aftermath from pregnancy complications

Your body feels WEAK and is sooo depleted 

BUT there is so much to be grateful for and you end up feeling conflicted when things are just "off". As mom's, we often feel pressured to push down those feelings, "tough it out", and just push through. We end up neglecting our own health (mental and physical) at the expense of taking care of our families. 

It shouldn't be that way. 

Did you know that a lot of what you eat can actually make a difference in your postpartum mental health? Or that your body is incredibly depleted after pregnancy which can make mental health symptoms worse if not corrected?

Unfortunately, that's often not discussed in your postpartum check up, and many times medication is the first line of defense in combat. It doesn't have to be, and it definitely shouldn't be the only thing offered!
